Shibir-backed panel sweeps RUCSU elections

The ‘Combined Student Alliance’ panel, backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, secured a landslide victory in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) elections, winning 20 out of 23 posts, including vice-president (VP) and assistant general secretary (GS).

The Chief Returning Officer, Professor Setaur Rahman, announced the results on Friday (October 17) at 8:00 am.

In the vice-president (VP) race, Md Mostakur Rahman Zahid of the Shibir-backed panel received 12,687 votes, while his closest rival, Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-backed ‘United New Generation’ panel, received 3,397 votes.

In the General Secretary (GS) contest, Salahuddin Ammar of the ‘Unity Against Hegemony’ panel was elected by a wide margin, receiving 11,497 votes. His nearest competitor, Fazle Rabbi Md Fahim Reza of the Shibir-backed panel, received 5,727 votes. Ammar is a former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, while Reza has also previously served as a coordinator.

In the Assistant General Secretary race, SM Salman Sabbir of the Shibir-backed panel won with 6,975 votes, defeating Zahin Biswas Esha of the Chhatra Dal-backed panel, who received 5,951 votes.

The total number of voters in the election was 28,901, including 11,305 female voters and 17,596 male voters. The overall voter turnout stood at 69.83%. Among the six female residential halls, voter turnout was 63.24%.
