The Ministry of Education has provided key updates regarding the seven government colleges in Dhaka and the proposed Dhaka Central University, amid ongoing public debate and discussions.

The information was released through a press statement by the ministry’s public relations officer Khalid Mahmud on Monday, December 8.

The ministry outlined seven major developments in the process.

Draft Ordinance in Progress: The draft Dhaka Central University Ordinance 2025 is being finalised to ensure quality education, timely examinations, result publication, and administrative efficiency.

Public Feedback Incorporated: Published online on September 24, the draft received over 5,000 comments from students, teachers, and civil society. Three consultation meetings were held, and inputs from relevant ministries were reviewed. A revised draft is expected to be discussed in an inter-ministerial meeting by December 25.

Ongoing Coordination: Continuous dialogue with the interim administration, college principals, teachers, and students is being maintained to ensure uninterrupted academic activities. A key meeting on admissions, registration, and class schedules was held on November 11.

Student Admissions for 2024–25: Applications were received for Arts & Social Sciences, Science, and Business units. Of 10,194 applicants, 9,388 students completed enrollment. An operational manual has been approved to guide administration and academic activities.

Class Commencement: Classes for the 2024–25 academic year will begin on January 1, 2026, after the winter break, following meetings with principals and teacher representatives.

Preserving College Identity: The ordinance revision aims to safeguard the colleges’ unique characteristics, maintain female education opportunities, protect assets, and preserve ongoing secondary education programs while integrating effectively with the proposed university.

Focus on Higher Education Quality: The ministry considers the establishment of Dhaka Central University a critical step toward improving national higher education standards. Teachers are urged to maintain professionalism, while students are expected to act responsibly to ensure uninterrupted learning.

The Ministry of Education emphasised that cooperation from all stakeholders is essential for a smooth and widely accepted implementation of the new university and related processes.
