JnUCSU elections rescheduled to January 6
The authorities of Jagannath University have announced January 6 as the revised date for elections to the Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and the university’s hall councils.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate held on the campus in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, December 30.
Earlier, JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim on Tuesday morning announced the postponement of the election in observance of the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The announcement triggered protests by students and candidates, who staged demonstrations across the campus and surrounded the vice-chancellor’s office for several hours.
In response to the escalating protests, the university convened another Syndicate meeting later in the day.
Taking students’ concerns into consideration, JnU VC said, “We respect the sentiments of the students.”
The election had been postponed due to prevailing circumstances but that authorities had quickly fixed a new date in line with student demands, with voting scheduled for January 6, he added.
