JCD calls for IU proctor's resignation over delay in justice for Sajid
The Islamic University (IU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Monday demanded the resignation of the university proctor Professor Dr M Shahinuzzaman over the delayed investigation into the murder of student Sajid Abdullah.
The demand was made during a human chain organised by students in front of the university’s administrative building on Monday, January 26.
Addressing the human chain, protesters warned that if the proctor is not removed, they would stage a sit-in at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Wednesday, January 27.
The demonstration, led by student leader Burhan Uddin, included members of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and students from various departments.
Students criticised the administration for failing to ensure justice despite ongoing investigations by the CID and university-appointed fact-finding committees. “The fact-finding committee’s report identifies several individuals, yet no arrests have been made. The Proctor and other officials must be held accountable,” protesters said.
Chhatra Dal coordinator Sahed Ahmed highlighted irregularities regarding CCTV footage, saying, “Control of the CCTV was shifted to the Proctor’s office in July, yet the footage has gone missing. Keys were reportedly with student Saddam Hossain. This negligence cannot continue at Islamic University,” he said.
They warned that if the proctor does not step down by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, they would besiege the Vice-Chancellor’s office at 11:00 am.
Responding to the protests, Dr Shahinuzzaman said that the hall provost is responsible for the missing CCTV footage.
“Our office has fully cooperated with the CID. I will continue to serve students and uphold justice, and will step down when the students no longer wish me to remain in this position,” he added.
