Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini has revealed the emotional reason behind keeping her husband, Bollywood icon Dharmendra’s funeral private.

She shared her thoughts during an interaction with UAE-based filmmaker Hamad Al Reyami, who met her in Mumbai following the legendary actor’s passing.

Hamad wrote that it was his first close meeting with Hema Malini and he could sense “an inner turmoil she was desperately trying to hide.” During the conversation, Hema Malini expressed deep regret over not spending more time with Dharmendra in his final months. Speaking with a trembling voice, she said, “I wish I had been at the farm on the same day I was with Dharmendra two months ago… I wish I had seen him there.”

She also shared Dharmendra’s lifelong love for poetry and literature, revealing how she often encouraged him to publish his writings. “I would ask him, ‘Why don’t you publish your beautiful poems?’ and he would smile and reply, ‘Not now… Let me finish some poems first,’” she said. Hamad reflected, “But time didn’t spare him, and he passed away…”

Explaining why the final rites were private, Hema Malini said Dharmendra always valued his dignity. “Throughout his life, Dharmendra never wanted anyone to see him weak or ill. He hid his pain even from his closest relatives. After a person passes away, the decision rests with the family,” she explained.

She also revealed the painful reality of his last days. Wiping her tears, she added, “What happened was a mercy… because, Hamad, you couldn’t have borne to see him in that state. His condition in his final days was cruel… painful… and even we could hardly bear to see him like that.”

Dharmendra passed away on November 24 at the age of 85. His funeral was held the following day at a private family ceremony attended by close relatives and friends. A prayer meet was later organized on November 27 in Mumbai. While questions arose over why a megastar of his stature was not given a public or state-level farewell, Bollywood sources say the family deliberately opted for privacy, respecting Dharmendra’s wishes and emotional considerations.

Known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, Dharmendra appeared in over 250 films spanning five decades, starring in iconic movies like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Anupama, and Satyakam. Beyond his acting career, he was admired for his humility, charm, and dedication to his family. He is survived by his wife Hema Malini, their two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, and his sons from his first marriage.

Hamad concluded his account with a heartfelt tribute, writing, “My forever hero, legendary Superstar DHARMENDRA.” Dharmendra’s passing leaves a void in Indian cinema, but his legacy as one of the most versatile and beloved actors of his generation continues to inspire millions.
