Trump to host Modi at White House next week

US President Donald Trump has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a visit to the White House next week, according to a White House official. The announcement comes just hours after a US military plane departed to repatriate deported migrants to India.

During a phone call on January 27, Trump and Modi discussed immigration policies, with Trump emphasising the need for India to purchase more American-made security equipment and establish fairer bilateral trading relations. As a key strategic partner of the US in countering China's influence, India is eager to strengthen its trade ties with Washington and simplify the visa process for its skilled workers seeking opportunities in the United States.

India is also hoping to avert potential tariffs that Trump has previously threatened over New Delhi’s high duties on US goods. Bilaterally, the US remains India's largest trading partner, with two-way trade exceeding $118 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Despite this, India recorded a trade surplus of $32 billion, a figure likely to feature prominently in discussions between the leaders.

The upcoming meeting underscores both nations' commitment to deepening economic and strategic cooperation while addressing contentious issues like trade imbalances and immigration reforms.
