Iranian drones hit US embassies in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait
An attack by two drones early Tuesday on the US Embassy in Riyadh sparked a small fire, a Saudi defence ministry spokesman said in a statement, as Iran pressed on with retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, reports AFP.
"The US Embassy in Riyadh was attacked by two drones, according to initial assessments. The attack resulted in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building," the statement said.
Two witnesses told AFP they saw fire engines around the embassy.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Kuwait was also struck by drones, three diplomatic sources told AFP, after smoke was seen rising from the diplomatic mission earlier on Monday.
One Kuwait-based diplomat and a Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the embassy was damaged by several drones, while a second Kuwait-based diplomat said the building was struck directly in the attack.
As an AFP correspondent saw smoke rising from the diplomatic mission on Iran's third day of retaliatory Gulf attacks, the US Embassy said people should not come to the facility, warning of "a continuing threat of missile and UAV (drone) attacks over Kuwait."
