SC upholds bail of GK Shamim in arms case

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has upheld a High Court (HC) order granting bail to expelled Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in an arms case.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Thursday.

GK Shamim’s lawyer Kumar Debul Dey confirmed the matter to Jago News.

The High Court on December 13, 2023, granted a six-month bail to GK Shamim in the case. 

Later, on December 19, the chamber judge court of the Appellate Division stayed the HC’s bail order until February 22. 

On September 25, 2022, a Dhaka court sentenced influential contractor GK Shamim and his seven bodyguards to lifetime imprisonment under the Arms Control Act.
