4 held over attack on Hindus in Doarabazar
Law enforcement agencies have arrested four individuals in connection with the vandalism and destruction of Hindu homes, shops, and the Loknath Temple in the Doarabazar area of Sunamganj.
The attack followed tensions over a derogatory Facebook post earlier this month.
The arrests were made on Thursday, December 14, according to the police headquarters. The incident began on December 3 when Akash Das, a 20-year-old resident of Monglargaon village under Doarabazar police station, posted offensive content on his Facebook account. Although the post was quickly deleted, screenshots circulated widely, inflaming local tensions.
Doarabazar police arrested Akash Das on the same day, but an angry mob attempted to seize him. For his safety, he was transferred to Sadar police station. Meanwhile, enraged locals attacked Hindu properties, including homes, shops, and the Loknath Temple.
The situation was eventually brought under control through the coordinated efforts of the district administration, police, and the army, led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Deputy Commissioner (DC).
Following the incident, the police launched an intensive investigation to identify those responsible. A case was filed against 150-170 unidentified individuals, with 12 named suspects. On December 14, the police arrested four suspects: Alim Hossain, 19, Sultan Ahmed Raju, 20, Imran Hossain, 31, Shajahan Hossain, 20.
The police have stated that efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and ensure justice.
