A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against celebrated cricketer and former Member of Parliament for the Magura-2 constituency, Shakib Al Hasan, in connection with a check fraud case.

The court also issued an arrest warrant against Gazi Shahgir Hossain, the Managing Director of Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited. The order was given on Sunday (January 19) by Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman.

The case was initiated by Shahibur Rahman, representing IFIC Bank, who filed the complaint on December 15 in the court of Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque. The court recorded the plaintiff's statement on the same day and summoned the defendants to appear in court.

The defendants named in the case include: Shakib Al Hasan, Gazi Shahgir Hossain, managing director of Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited, Imdadul Haque, a director of the company, and Malaika Begum, a director of the company.

On Sunday, accused Imdadul Haque appeared in court and was granted bail. For deceased accused Malaika Begum, the court sought a death report.

According to case details, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited took loans from the Banani branch of IFIC Bank at various times for business purposes. To repay the loans, the company issued two checks. However, the checks, amounting to approximately Tk 4.15 crore, were dishonoured due to insufficient funds.

The dishonoured checks prompted the bank to file the case against Shakib and others associated with the company. Following their failure to respond to court summons, arrest warrants were issued.

This legal development is a significant blow to Shakib Al Hasan, who is both a prominent sports figure and a public personality in Bangladesh. The case could have repercussions on his public image and other professional engagements.

Further updates are awaited as the legal proceedings continue.
