Foreigners in Bangladesh can now access 999 in English
From now on, various diplomatic missions, UN agencies, and foreign tourists traveling in Bangladesh will be able to call the national emergency service, 999, in English to receive assistance.
This was announced in a notice signed by Mohammad Tabarak Ullah, Additional DIG of 999, on Thursday, February 13.
The notice states that foreign nationals from diplomatic missions, UN organizations, development partners, as well as foreign tourists living or visiting Bangladesh, can now call 999 in English using mobile SIM cards or landline phones in the country to access emergency police, fire services, and ambulances.
Under the direction of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), necessary measures have been taken to ensure emergency services for foreign nationals.
Additional DIG Ullah further informed that this service has been available since January 12. For English-speaking service seekers, a dedicated duty desk is staffed in three daily shifts to provide assistance.
To receive services in English, callers must press '2' after dialing 999.
