Atiur, Barkat sued for ‘embezzling Tk 297cr’

The Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC, has filed a case against 23 individuals, including former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman and economist Dr Abul Barkat, on allegation of embezzling around Tk 297 crore.

Other accused include former BB deputy governor-2 Abu Hena Mohammad Raji Hasan, former assistant director Mst Ismat Ara Begum, Janata Bank’s former directors Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Md Imdadul Haque, Nagibul Islam Dipu, Dr RM Debnath, Md Abu Naser, Mst Sangeeta Ahmed, Professor Dr Nitai Chandra Nath, and managing director and CEO Abdus Salam Azad.

ACC deputy director Md Najmul Hussain filed the case with ACC Dhaka coordinated office on Thursday, February 20, the anti-graft body’s director general Md Akter Hossain confirmed.

The case statement said the accused misappropriated about Tk 297 crore of Janata Bank PLC lent in favour of AnonTex Group.
