EC proceeds for nat’l elections targeting Dec
The Election Commission is gearing up for a historic vote, setting its sights on December 2025 for the next national election.
Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar announced the timeline Sunday during a media briefing at the Nirbachan Bhaban, signalling a meticulous plan to ensure readiness.
“If we target December, we’ll be fully prepared by July or August next year. The schedule will be unveiled with 45 to 55 days to go,” Sarkar said.
With December firmly in view, the EC is forging ahead, undeterred by external pressures. “We’re moving forward with courage and independence—our work isn’t swayed by anyone’s convenience or instructions,” he emphasised. “We’ll announce the schedule at a reasonable time, Inshallah. No pressure will bend us.”
Sarkar acknowledged the chatter among political parties but stressed the commission’s focus on reality. “We’re acting swiftly and decisively to ensure a December vote happens as early as possible,” he added, leaving room for the timeline to unfold.
The EC is also juggling local and national election plans, but challenges remain. “We’re considering local government elections—municipalities, cities, district councils, union councils—but holding them simultaneously requires preparations we’re still assessing,” Sarkar noted.
