3 sentenced to life imprisonment for gang rape of teen girl

A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment and two juveniles to 10 years in prison for the gang rape of a teenage girl in Kamrangirchar, Dhaka.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Wednesday (March 12).

Prosecutor Ershad Alam George of the court confirmed the verdict.

The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are: Mohan, son of Jamal Uddin from Faridpur village in Dhunat Upazila of Bogura; Sabbir, son of Md Mizan from Mukundagati village in Belkuchi Upazila of Sirajganj; and Rasel, son of Kamal alias Abul Kalam from Chikandi village in Palong Model Thana (Sadar) of Shariatpur. In addition to the imprisonment, the tribunal also fined them Tk one lakh each, with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.

Meanwhile, two juveniles were sentenced to jail for 10 years, along with a fine of Tk lakh taka each, and an additional year of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.

According to court sources, the three convicts sentenced to life imprisonment were present in court during the verdict. After the verdict, they were sent to jail with a conviction warrant. However, the two convicted juveniles are absconding. Arrest warrants have been issued against them along with the conviction warrant.

According to the case details, on June 17, 2020, the accused took the victim to the fourth floor of an under-construction building of Nur Alam's house in Hasan Nagar under Kamrangirchar Police Station and raped her. The victim's mother filed a case in this incident. After investigating the case, Inspector Mohammad Mostafa Anwar of Kamrangirchar Police Station submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing five people.
