Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani announced there will be no Independence Day parade this year, citing a sombre national mood.

“The adviser told us we’re in wartime activities—we’re not in a celebratory spirit,” he said after a meeting on law and order for Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday.

With Ramadan underway, Independence Day on March 26, and Eid holidays approaching, Nasimul Ghani assessed security risks.

“We’ve analysed potential threats and consulted on minimising worker unrest during Eid,” he noted.

He urged BGMEA and BKMEA leaders to ensure timely salary payments to garment workers, adding, “We want no property damage—pay them on time.” A phased leave plan is under review, though details remain pending.

Security measures in place

Nasimul Ghani dismissed immediate threats for March 26: “I see no security risk.”

For Eid, he emphasised preparedness against theft and robbery: “Police have strengthened recently, and we’re fully ready. There’s always a risk, but no visible threat, God willing.”

He echoed prior police commitments, ensuring protection at shopping malls and key travel hubs to curb extortion and crime.
