A tug-of-war over Independence Day plans erupted Sunday, March 16, as the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing shot down claims that this year’s March 26 parade is cancelled.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani had earlier declared the event off, citing a wartime mood. Not so fast, says the top office.

Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder clarified late Sunday: “Reports of no parade are untrue. Renovations at Dhaka’s National Stadium mean we can’t host it here, as in recent years. But the interim government is committed to honouring the day elsewhere.”

Parades will proceed with “due dignity” across Bangladesh’s 63 other districts, he announced, with District Commissioners tasked to organize and salute the nation’s freedom fighters.

Nasimul Ghani’s earlier statement came after a law-and-order meeting tied to Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr. “The adviser said we’re in wartime activities—not in a celebratory spirit,” he told reporters, framing Ramadan, March 26, and Eid as a trio too tense for fanfare.

He had brushed off security threats but leaned on a sombre national pulse to justify scrapping the parade.

Hours later, the Press Wing flipped the script. The issue isn’t mood—it’s logistics. Dhaka’s stadium facelift forced a pivot, not a cancellation.
