Nine teachers at Jahangirnagar University have been temporarily suspended for their alleged involvement in an attack on students during the anti-discrimination movement on campus. The attack was carried out by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and the police.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan confirmed this after a Syndicate meeting held at 3 am on Tuesday. The meeting had begun at 11:00 am on Monday in the council room of the university’s new administrative building.

The teachers who were temporarily suspended are: former Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Mohammad Mostafa Firoz, former Proctor Professor Alamgir Kabir, Associate Professor of the Department of Government and Politics ASM Firoz-ul-Hassan, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Bashir Ahmed, former Provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Professor Israfil Ahmed, Associate Professor of the Department of Geography and Environment Mehdi Iqbal, Professor of the Department of History Hosne Ara, former Provost of Rabindranath Tagore Hall Nazmul Hasan Talukder, and Professor of Public Health and Informatics Mohammad Tajuddin Sikdar.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor stated that these nine teachers have been temporarily suspended due to their alleged involvement in the attacks during the student movement, which saw participation from both the BCL and police. Initial investigations have suggested the involvement of several other teachers in the attack. A structured committee has been formed to gather further evidence and detailed information about their participation.

Additionally, the pension benefits of the then Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Nurul Alam and Registrar Abu Hasan, both of whom have since retired, have been canceled. They are among the accused in the attack.
