Sculptor’s house torched, IGP ordered to take action

A fire has been set at the house of sculptor Manabendra Ghosh, who was involved in creating a motif for the Pahela Baishakh celebration procession.

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take action against those responsible for the incident.

Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki confirmed the directive in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“The police have launched an operation to apprehend all those involved in the attack on sculptor Manabendra Ghosh’s residence. Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Bhai has been consulted, and he has given clear instructions to the Inspector General of Police in this regard,” Farooki wrote.

“In recent days, the Awami League ousted in July have been inciting attacks against sculptor Manabendra Ghosh online, accusing him of "creating an effigy of Hasina. Each of these individuals will be brought under the purview of the law,” he added.

“From the hills to the plains, Bangladesh has just concluded an extraordinary festival of friendship. A unique emotion lingers in everyone’s heart. And at this very moment, they launched an attack — a stark reminder that July is still unfolding. But they don’t know that the people of Bangladesh are moving forward with July in their hearts. In the face of the unity of Bangladesh's people, they are insignificant,” he concluded.
