Parvez murder: Anti-discrimination student movement leader arrested
Zahidul Islam Parvez

Another accused in the case filed over the murder of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University, has been arrested. The arrestee, Hridoy Miazi (23), serves as the Joint Member Secretary of the Banani Thana unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday evening by Lieutenant Colonel Zahid, Commander of RAB-1, to Jago News.

He stated that Hridoy Miazi, the fifth accused in the case, was arrested in Cumilla in connection with Parvez’s murder. Legal proceedings are currently underway.

Earlier, around midnight on Sunday, Banani police conducted a raid in the Wireless Gate area of Mohakhali, Dhaka, and arrested three individuals in connection with the murder. The arrestees — Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal (19), Alvi Hossain Junayed (19), and Al Amin Sani (19) — are not students of the university, and their names were not listed in the FIR.

On Monday, the court granted a seven-day remand for the three, and they are currently in police custody.

According to the police and the FIR details, Parvez had gone to an alley near the university to eat singara, a local snack. At the time, two female students were also present there. They alleged that Parvez was laughing at them and subsequently called their friends. Although the university administration later mediated and resolved the issue, it did not end there.

Later, Mahathi, Meheraz, and Abuzar Gifari allegedly brought a group of youths from the Hazaribagh area and attacked Parvez. While trying to flee toward the university’s main gate, Parvez was fatally injured. The attackers reportedly stabbed him in the chest and back with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a case with Banani Police Station, naming eight individuals as accused. Several of them are students of the university’s English and Law departments, while the others are outsiders.

The accused are Meheraz Islam (20), Abuzar Gifari Pias (20), Mahathir Hasan (20), Sobhan Niyaz Tushar (24), Hridoy Miazi (23), Rifat (21), Ali (21), and Fahim (22). In addition, 25–30 unidentified individuals have also been accused.

According to the FIR, Sobhan Niyaz Tushar is identified as the Joint Convener of the Banani unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, while Hridoy Miazi is listed as the Joint Member Secretary of the same organization.
