Chamber court stays Chinmoy's bail

The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed the High Court bail granted to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Mancha, in a sedition case.

The Chamber court passed the order on Tuesday, May 6, after hearing an appeal filed by the prosecution, additional attorney general Barrister Anik R Haque told Jago News.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Chinmoy, also the principal of Pundarik Dham in Chattogram, in the capital on November 25. He was later handed over to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

On November 26, Judge Kazi Shariful Islam of the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Chattogram rejected Chinmoy’s bail plea and ordered his transfer to jail.

Following the bail rejection, several hundred ISKCON supporters surrounded the prison van carrying Chinmoy, chanting various slogans. Law enforcement officials managed to bring the situation under control after over two hours, allowing Chinmoy to be taken to jail.

During the commotion, ISKCON supporters reportedly attacked, resulting in the death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif within the Chattogram court premises.
