Indo-Pak tensions: Bangladesh puts police on alert in border districts

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam announced that police superintendents in Bangladesh’s border districts have been placed on high alert to prevent militants or terrorists from entering the country amid escalating India-Pakistan conflict.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Bangladesh Police Annual Shooting Competition 2024 in Gulshan-1, Dhaka, on Wednesday, Alam emphasised heightened security to safeguard national stability.

The directive follows India’s Operation Sindoor airstrikes on May 6–7 targeting alleged terror sites in Pakistan, which Pakistan condemned as attacks on civilians.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Wednesday statement, expressed deep concern, urging both nations to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. “Bangladesh is closely monitoring the situation and calls for actions that promote regional peace,” the statement read.

Additional IGP Md Mustafa Kamal and other officials attended the event. Dhaka remains vigilant, prioritising border security to prevent spillover from the conflict.
