No entry to Suhrawardy Udyan after 8pm

In response to the brutal stabbing of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samya in Suhrawardy Udyan, LGRD, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud announced seven critical measures to overhaul the park’s safety and management.
The decisions, shared via a Facebook post on Tuesday evening, aim to transform the park from a hotspot of fear into a secure public space following the tragic incident.
Shahriar Alam Shammo, a master’s student in the Institute of Education and Research and the literature and publications secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit, was fatally stabbed around midnight on Tuesday in the park. The killing sparked outrage, prompting swift action.
“We met with DU administration and Suhrawardy Udyan authorities to address this tragedy,” Mahmud wrote, outlining the following steps:
Permanent closure of the gate behind Raju Memorial Monument sculpture to curb unauthorised access.
A joint operation by the Ministry of Public Works, City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and the Department of Narcotics Control to evict illegal shops, halt drug dealing, and ensure cleanliness.
Formation of a Ministry of Public Works committee for ongoing monitoring and operations.
Installation of adequate lighting and CCTV cameras, with regular monitoring.
Establishment of a dedicated police box in the park for enhanced security.
Introduction of disciplined management akin to Ramna Park’s model.
Enforcement of a public entry ban after 8 PM to prevent late-night incidents.
“Implementation begins immediately,” Mahmud stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to justice. Three suspects have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is underway to ensure the culprits face trial. The adviser called for cooperation from the university and students, aiming to restore Suhrawardy Udyan as a safe haven amidst public grief over Samya’s death.
