Home adviser defends arrest of Nusraat Faria

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that actress Nusraat Faria was arrested because a case had been filed against her.

He made the remarks on Monday while briefing reporters following a law-and-order meeting at the Home Ministry's conference room, in response to questions from journalists.

“She was arrested because there is a case against her. If we hadn’t taken action, you yourselves would have raised questions,” he said. “However, an investigation is ongoing. If she is proven innocent, she will be released.”

When asked about the statement made by Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki regarding Faria's arrest, Jahangir said, “That could be his personal opinion.”

He also stated that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure that only those actually involved in the July massacre are arrested, and that no innocent person is subjected to undue suffering.

Farooki had earlier expressed disappointment over the arrest of Nusraat Faria, calling it an “embarrassing incident” for the authorities and urging focus on bringing the real perpetrators of the July attacks to justice.
