Former JnU prof Anwara arrested in uprising case
Police have arrested freedom fighter and former Professor Anwara Begum Anu of the Political Science Department at Jagannath University (JnU) in connection with a murder case filed during a mass uprising.
She is scheduled to be produced before the court on Thursday (May 29), police confirmed.
The arrest took place around 7:30 pm on Wednesday (May 28) in front of the university, after students handed her over to police. The matter was confirmed by Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Saiful Islam.
Anwara Begum is an accused in a case filed by Sujan Molla, former general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) JnU unit, in February this year.
OC Saiful Islam told Jago News, “Students detained her in front of the campus and informed us. Police then went to the scene and brought her to the police station. She is an accused in a case filed in February. She will be sent to court today after being formally arrested.”
Anwara Begum is also a former member of the constitutional body, the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC). She currently serves as a nominee on Jagannath University’s Upgradation Board. She stated that the university registrar’s office had summoned her to campus through an official letter.
However, Professor Dr. Muhammad Tajammul Haque, the university’s proctor, said he was unaware of the matter. Speaking to Jago News, he said, “The university administration was not informed about Professor Anwara Begum’s visit to the campus or the case against her. As far as I know, police arrested her from outside the campus.”
Chairman of the Political Science Department, Md. Mezbah Ul Azam Saudagar, said, “She was not invited by the department. The department does not have the authority to call anyone for the Upgradation Board meeting. As far as I know, she was summoned through a letter from the registrar’s office.”
