Yunus seeks Mahathir’s support for Bangladesh’s entry to ASEAN
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus urged former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to support Bangladesh’s bid for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during a meeting on the sidelines of the Nikkei Forum: 30th Future of Asia in Tokyo on Thursday, May 29.
“Professor Yunus sincerely requested Dr Mahathir to leverage his stature and influence to assist Bangladesh in its pursuit of ASEAN membership,” said Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam during a media briefing.
Dr Mahathir, a long-time friend of Bangladesh, pledged his support for the country’s efforts to join the regional bloc.
The two leaders also discussed other pressing issues, including the Rohingya crisis and the historic mass uprising in Bangladesh last year.
They highlighted the professionalism and dedication of Bangladeshis working globally, which has bolstered the nation’s international reputation.
In a warm gesture, Prof Yunus extended advance birthday wishes to Dr Mahathir, who will turn 100 on July 10, 2025, and invited him to visit Bangladesh at his convenience.
Earlier, in his keynote address at the Nikkei Forum’s inaugural session, Prof Yunus called for a new era of Asian cooperation, emphasizing inclusion and sustainability. He proposed a seven-point agenda to transform Asia into a hub of shared prosperity by unlocking new opportunities.
Prof Yunus arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday afternoon to attend the Nikkei Forum and hold bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
