DGHS issues 12 guidelines to curb rising COVID Infections

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued an urgent advisory in response to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases across Bangladesh, driven by new sub-variants of the virus.

At a press conference on June 11, 2025, Professor Dr Abu Jafor, Director General of DGHS, highlighted the global increase in infections and announced measures to prevent further spread, particularly through international travel.

Travel and surveillance measures

The DGHS has advised against non-essential travel to India and neighbouring countries where infection rates are rising. To mitigate risks, health screening and surveillance have been intensified at all land, sea, and air ports in Bangladesh. IHR desks at these ports are now under strict instructions to enforce hygiene protocols and monitor international travellers to prevent the importation of new variants.

12 guidelines to prevent COVID-19 spread

To protect public health, the DGHS has issued the following 12 instructions:

Minimise Public Gatherings: Avoid crowded places; wear a mask if attendance is unavoidable.

Regular Mask Use: Wear masks consistently to protect against respiratory infections.

Cover Nose and Mouth: Use your elbow or a tissue when sneezing or coughing to prevent droplet spread.

Dispose of Tissues Safely: Discard used tissues immediately in a covered trash bin.

Frequent Hand Hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.

Avoid Touching Face: Refrain from touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Maintain Physical Distance: Keep at least 3 feet away from individuals showing symptoms.

Stay Home if Ill: Remain at home if sick; seek medical care at a hospital if symptoms worsen.

Raise Awareness: Promote disease prevention guidelines to educate the public.

Mask for Infected Individuals: Ensure infected persons wear masks to cover their nose and mouth.
