15 vehicle breakdowns on Jamuna Bridge cause traffic chaos

Following the Eid holidays, a surge of travellers returning to Dhaka via the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway has led to significant disruptions.
Between Friday night (June 13) and 4:30pm on Saturday (June 14), 15 vehicles broke down on the Jamuna Bridge, triggering severe traffic jams on both sides.
As a result, North Bengal-bound vehicles have been halted since 3:30pm Saturday, while Dhaka-bound traffic continues to move slowly on both sides of the bridge.
According to the Jamuna Bridge authority, vehicle pressure on the highway has intensified since Friday night.
Overnight road accidents further complicated the situation, requiring time to clear wrecked vehicles. Additionally, multiple vehicles broke down sequentially, delaying repairs and prompting a temporary suspension of toll collection on both sides.
Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, Executive Engineer at the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, told Jago News, “One vehicle remains stranded on the bridge. Over 15 vehicles have broken down since last night until 4:30pm. Older, poorly maintained cars are primarily affected, though even well-kept vehicles have failed. Since the overnight accidents, breakdowns have occurred almost hourly, stalling traffic. With heavy vehicle volume on the highway, we hope to restore normal flow soon.”
