Man killed in mob beating over child rape allegation

A man was killed in a mob beating over allegations of raping a six-year-old child in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.

Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bulbul Islam confirmed the incident on Sunday morning (June 29).

The mob attack occurred around midnight on Saturday in Polupara village under Katabari Union of Gobindaganj upazila. The deceased, Habil Mia, 50, was the son of the late Kasem Ali of the same village.

According to locals, on Friday afternoon, Habil Mia allegedly lured a six-year-old girl from the village to his house and raped her before fleeing the scene. After the family discovered the incident, they took the child to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, the victim’s father filed a written complaint with the police.

On Saturday night, locals spotted Habil Mia roaming in the area and detained him before beating him. Upon receiving information, Gobindaganj police rescued him in critical condition and took him to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.

OC Bulbul Islam confirmed that the accused died following a mob beating. The body has been sent to Gaibandha District Hospital for autopsy.
