Holy Ashura being observed across country

The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), is being observed across the country on Sunday with due respect and religious solemnity.

Today marks the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar year 1447. This day is widely known as Holy Ashura.

It is regarded as the Day of Karbala — a day of mourning and sorrow — which holds profound religious significance for Muslims across the globe.

On this day, Muslims recall the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family members and 72 companions, who embraced martyrdom in 680 AD in the desert of Karbala on the banks of the Euphrates River in Iraq, standing up for truth and justice against the oppressive forces of Yazid.

Their self-sacrifice to uphold the ideals of Islam — a religion of peace, truth, and harmony — remains a shining example in the annals of human history.

On the eve of Ashura, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message paying deep respect to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the other martyrs of Karbala.

In his message, the Chief Adviser termed Ashura as a mournful yet significant and glorious day.

He said, "On this mournful day of Holy Ashura, I pay my deepest respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), the beloved grandson of the greatest Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), and to all those who were martyred in the desert of Karbala."

Professor Yunus stated that Islam is a religion of truth, justice, and peace, and in upholding these ideals, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), his family, and companions made the ultimate sacrifice on the 10th of Muharram at the hands of Yazid's soldiers.

He added that this heroic stand against injustice will forever remain a source of strength and inspiration for humanity in the fight for truth and justice.

The Chief Adviser also noted that several significant events, including the creation of the world, are believed to have occurred on this day. He cited Hadiths in which the Prophet (PBUH) emphasized the importance of fasting on the day of Ashura.

"Let us reflect on the lessons of this sacred day and strive to perform good deeds to attain closeness to Almighty Allah. May this day inspire us to uphold justice, peace, and equality in society. On this Holy Day of Ashura, I pray for the unity, solidarity, and continued progress of the Muslim Ummah," said Professor Yunus.

Today is a public holiday.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels are broadcasting special programmes, while national dailies and online portals have published special supplements highlighting the significance of the day.

Special prayers and religious discussions are being held at mosques and other religious institutions, including Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and the Islamic Foundation.
