Ex-IGP Mamun confesses in uprising case, to testify as state witness
Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has confessed to his involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising.
In a written statement presented before the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday, Mamun expressed his willingness to unmask others involved in the crimes. According to both prosecution and defense lawyers, he has agreed to testify as a state witness.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar and comprising Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, formally framed charges against three individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the case.
With the charges framed, formal trial proceedings have begun. The tribunal has set August 3 and 4 for the prosecution’s opening statement and the commencement of witness testimony.
The accused in the case are Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Among them, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are reportedly absconding.
