Land depression triggers nationwide rainfall, to persist for 3 more days

Since Sunday evening, Bangladesh has been drenched by widespread rainfall, with intermittent showers continuing across the country on Monday.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts that the downpour, driven by a potent land depression, will persist for at least three more days, bringing relief from heat but raising concerns for coastal areas.

At 3:00pm on Monday, the BMD reported that a low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh’s southwest coast (23.0° N, 88.6° E) had intensified into a land depression.

This system is fuelling significant air pressure variations in the North Bay of Bengal, potentially causing gusty or stormy winds along Bangladesh’s coast and sea ports.

The BMD has issued Local Warning Signal 3 for the ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra, urging heightened vigilance.

Senior Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick told Jago News, “Monsoon low-pressure systems typically trigger intermittent rainfall, cooling temperatures and reducing heat.

This month’s rainfall has been normal, except in Feni, where it exceeds average levels.” The ongoing showers are expected to provide respite from summer heat but may disrupt daily activities and coastal operations.

The BMD has advised all fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay of Bengal to navigate cautiously near the coast until further notice, prioritizing safety amid turbulent weather conditions.

As the land depression continues to influence weather patterns, residents and authorities are bracing for sustained rainfall.

While the cooling effect is welcome, the potential for stormy winds along the coast underscores the need for preparedness. The BMD will continue monitoring the system, with updates expected as the situation evolves.
