Writ seeks probe into stone theft in Sylhet

A writ petition has been filed seeking directives to investigate the theft of white stones from the tourist spot in Bholaganj, Sylhet, and to take prompt action against those responsible.

The petition also sought orders to determine whether there was any negligence by the authorities concerned — local or central — in preventing the looting.

Additionally, it requested instructions to assess the extent of financial and environmental damage caused by the incident.

The writ sought orders directing three separate ministries to investigate the incident and submit their reports. The Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet, the UNO of Companiganj, and eight other individuals were also made respondents to the petition.

The petition was filed by lawyer Mir KM Nurunnabi in the relevant branch of the High Court. A two-member bench of the court is scheduled to hear the matter on Sunday (17 August).
