Rickshaw-puller arrested at Dhanmondi 32 gets bail

A Dhaka court has granted bail to the rickshaw-puller who was arrested by the police while trying to pay his respects at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhanmondi.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam gave Azizur Rahman bail on Tk 1,000 bond on Sunday, August 17.

Azizur, a 42-year-old rickshaw-puller from Ghorashal village in Jhenaidah, had come to Dhanmondi road 32 on August 15 carrying a bouquet of flowers. Attached to the bouquet was a note expressing his reverence for Sheikh Mujib.

As he reached there, a group of men surrounded him. Without warning, they began shouting, accusing him of ulterior motives. The confrontation quickly turned violent. Azizur was punched, slapped, and knocked to the ground in a brutal attack.

His rickshaw was overturned and left abandoned on the roadside as the assault unfolded. Bystanders filmed the incident, with footage rapidly spreading across social media.

Later, the police arrested him from the spot and subsequently he was sent to jail following a court order.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the rickshaw-puller has not been made accused in any murder case, rather he was sent to court as a suspect in a case filed with the Dhanmondi police station in April.
