Son dies, parents critically burnt in Old Dhaka transformer blast
A couple sustained severe burns and their son died in a transformer explosion in Gendaria, Old Dhaka.
Mezbah Uddin, 28, who suffered 100 percent burns, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. His parents—Mohammad Moslem, 65, and Salma Begum, 50—are admitted to the institute in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 2:00 am on Friday on Haricharan Road in Gendaria, when a transformer beside their house exploded.
Mezbah’s sister, Tasnuva Tabassum, told Jago News that the transformer had been installed right beside their second-floor apartment. “Due to the rain at night, the transformer kept sparking repeatedly. At one point, it caught fire. The flames then spread inside our home, leaving my father, mother, and brother burnt,” she said.
Confirming the matter on Friday noon, Dr Mohammad Sultan Mahmud Shikder, acting residential surgeon of the Burn Institute, said Mezbah died despite efforts to save him. Mohammad Moslem sustained burns on 90 percent of his body, while Salma Begum suffered burns on 55 percent. Both also suffered airway burns, leaving their conditions extremely critical.
