Gazipur Police Commissioner withdrawn
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Dr. Nazmul Karim Khan has been withdrawn for obstructing public roads during his personal commute.
An order signed on Monday (September 1) by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam directed him to hand over his responsibilities by September 2 and report to the Police Headquarters.
The move followed a report in a national daily alleging that the GMP commissioner regularly blocked public roads while traveling to and from the office, drawing widespread criticism. After the report, he was also served a show-cause notice, confirmed Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
Sources at the Home Ministry and the police said the decision was made during a core committee meeting at the Home Ministry last Sunday, where the recent situation in the Gazipur Metropolitan area was reviewed. The withdrawal decision was reportedly based on an intelligence report presented at the meeting.
Nazmul Karim Khan is an officer of the 15th batch of the police and has served as president of the Bangladesh Police Service Association. During the previous Awami League government, he was forced into retirement without promotion. However, following the change of government, he reapplied, returned to service, and was promoted to Deputy Inspector General (DIG). He was later appointed commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.
