DUCSU elections: Roads including Shahbagh to remain closed Tuesday

Traffic diversions and road closures will be enforced in and around Dhaka University tomorrow, Tuesday, 9 September, ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and Hall Parliament elections.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced strict traffic control measures to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the long-awaited polls.

In a public notice issued on Monday, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali informed city residents that several major crossings near the university will be closed throughout election day. The affected areas include: Shahbagh Crossing; High Court Crossing; Nilkhet Crossing; Shahidullah Hall Crossing; and

Palashi Crossing.

The DMP has urged drivers and passengers to avoid these crossings and surrounding roads as much as possible to prevent congestion and ensure the safety of students and voters.

Vehicles intending to travel toward Dhaka University are advised to use alternative routes and refrain from entering the campus during the voting period. However, ambulances, fire services, and other emergency vehicles will be allowed access, even through restricted zones, to ensure public safety is not compromised.

“The election is expected to draw large numbers of students and observers to the campus,” the DMP notice stated. “To maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident, traffic regulation and movement control will be strictly enforced.”

The DUCSU elections, the first in over a decade, are being held amid high anticipation and tight security. The police have also stepped up patrols and deployed additional personnel at key entry points to the university.

Authorities are advising commuters across the capital to plan their routes in advance, allow extra travel time, and rely on real-time traffic updates during the day.

With Dhaka already facing routine congestion, the closures are expected to impact traffic flow in central parts of the city, particularly during peak hours. The DMP will have traffic officers stationed at major diversion points to guide drivers and manage movement.

As Dhaka braces for one of its most significant student events in years, the message is clear: Stay informed, stay patient, and avoid the university vicinity unless necessary.
