Bangladesh ready sending peacekeepers to buffer zone if UN calls
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said on Wednesday that Bangladesh stands ready to contribute peacekeeping forces to a proposed buffer zone in conflict-hit regions including Russia-Ukraine, provided the United Nations formally proposes such a mission.
Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Touhid emphasised that the decision ultimately rests with the UN, but expressed hope for a swift ceasefire and a return to stability.
"The UN will decide on this. I hope there will be a ceasefire between the conflicting parties. If a ceasefire happens, the UN will definitely play a role in maintaining peace and security. We have extensive experience in peacekeeping operations around the world. So, if there is an opportunity, Bangladesh will definitely want to participate," he said.
Bangladesh is one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions, with thousands of personnel currently serving in conflict zones across Africa and the Middle East. The country has built a strong reputation for professionalism, neutrality, and effectiveness in peacekeeping over several decades.
Touhid iterated Bangladesh’s commitment to global peace and multilateralism, stating that Dhaka views UN-led peace efforts as essential to long-term stability.
