The wife of a local BNP leader was hacked to death by assailants in Quizbari village of Mogra Union in Sadar upazila, Tangail, on Tuesday night. The deceased, Lily Akter, was the wife of SM Anisur Rahman Uttam, general secretary of the union unit of the party.

According to local residents and BNP activists, Uttam owns a biscuit factory next to his house and usually goes there every evening after prayers. On Tuesday evening, Uttam was delayed, so Lily Akter went to the factory instead. At that time, masked assailants lying in wait attacked her with sharp weapons. When her screams drew the attention of locals, the attackers fled. Lily was taken to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Locals said two people were standing outside the factory while several others, with their faces covered and armed with sharp weapons, were inside. It is suspected that the assailants intended to target the BNP leader.

Farhad Iqbal, Secretary of the Tangail District unit of BNP, told Jago News, “It is not yet known who carried out this attack. We are deeply shocked by this incident.”

Tanvir Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station, told Jago News that the body has been kept in the morgue of Tangail General Hospital.
