Police in Chittagong made public announcements via loudspeakers urging house-owners not to rent houses to leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.

The announcement was made on Wednesday (17 September) afternoon by Karnaphuli Police Station. A video of the incident later spread on Facebook, sparking widespread discussion.

In the one-minute-17-second video, a young man wearing a lungi and jersey is seen making the announcement from a CNG-run autorickshaw.

He stated: “Attention all landlords in the Karnaphuli area: if any new tenants come to rent a house, their ID cards and other documents must first be submitted to the police station. No one belonging to any banned organization may be given a house to rent. If any tenant is found involved in terrorist activities on behalf of a banned organization, the house-owner will also be detained as an accomplice to terrorism. By order of CMP, Karnaphuli Police Station.”

The announcement further added: “If anyone rents a house to members of leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned, legal action will also be taken against the house-owners.”

Speaking on the matter, Karnaphuli Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Sharif said it was a “misunderstanding” that was later corrected. “What was meant is all government-banned organizations in general, not any specific party,” he clarified.
