1 killed, 25 injured in Narsingdi AL-BNP clash

A man was killed and 25 others injured in a clash between supporters of the Awami League (AL) and the BNP in Alokbali Union of Sadar Upazila, Narsingdi, early Thursday, over local dominance.

The deceased has been identified as Edon Mia, 62. Among the injured, five were reportedly shot, with three in critical condition and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to police and relatives of the deceased, the conflict arose from a long-standing dispute between Asad Ali, president of Alokbali Union unit of the Awami League, and Noab Ali, joint convener of the Union unit of the BNP, over control of the area. After August 5, Awami League supporters had reportedly fled the area. Their attempt to return sparked clashes with BNP supporters early today.

During the confrontation, Awami League activists allegedly opened indiscriminate gunfire on BNP members. A total of 26 people, including Edon Mia, were injured and taken to Sadar Hospital and other medical facilities.

SI Nasim Mia of Narsingdi Model Police Station confirmed that the clash over local dominance resulted in one death.
