A young man was killed in a robbery attack on the Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram Highway at Dulahazara Union in Chakaria upazila, Cox’s Bazar, while four others were seriously injured and admitted to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 12:00 am on Thursday (September 18) in the Malumghat area of the union.

The deceased, Mahmudullah Riyad (30), was a resident of Shialia Para in Balukhali, Ukhiya upazila. His wife had passed away in a hospital 22 days ago while undergoing treatment. The couple had two young children.

Touhidul Anwar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, said, “We have confirmed one death in the robbery attack. Additional police personnel have been deployed at the scene, and operations to arrest the assailants began last night.”

Locals said a gang of robbers stopped a motorcycle late at night near the Malumghat slope of the highway by tying a rope across the road and attacked the passengers. Mahmudullah Riyad was seriously injured during the attack and was later taken to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex by locals, where the duty doctor declared him dead. Four others injured in the attack were also taken to the hospital by locals, two of whom are reportedly in critical condition.

Residents alleged that robbers have become increasingly active at various points along the highway, frequently stopping vehicles late at night, assaulting passengers, and looting valuables.

Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, Additional Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar, said, “We are investigating how the incident occurred, and legal action will be taken against those involved. Efforts are underway to prevent such incidents from recurring.”
