Rohingya leaders thank Yunus for 7-point plan at UN
Rohingya leaders thanked Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus after he presented a seven-point global action plan at the High-Level Conference on the Rohingya and other Myanmar minorities at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who is accompanying Yunus at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, shared the information in a Facebook post at 5:11 am on Wednesday (Bangladesh local time).
During the conference, Professor Yunus urged the international community to adopt a seven-point global strategy, including a realistic roadmap for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas, to resolve the protracted crisis. He warned that time is running out both for the displaced community and for the countries hosting them.
Speaking at the high-level conference, Yunus emphasized that the world must move beyond expressions of solidarity and take decisive action. He outlined seven specific measures:
1. Devise a practical roadmap for the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya, alongside reasonable stabilization of Rakhine.
2. Exert effective pressure on Myanmar and the Arakan Army to end violence against the Rohingya and begin sustainable repatriation, starting with those recently arrived in Bangladesh and those internally displaced.
3. Mobilise international support to stabilize Rakhine and place an international civilian presence to monitor stabilization efforts.
4. Support confidence-building measures for the sustainable integration of the Rohingya into Rakhine society and governance.
5. Mobilise donor contributions to fully fund the Joint Response Plan.
6. Pursue accountability and restorative justice.
7. Dismantle the narco-economy and combat transboundary crimes.
