CEC promises election as transparent as a mirror
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the Election Commission is moving forward through a transparent process.
“We want to hold an election as transparent as a mirror. For that, the cooperation of all is needed,” he said.
He made the remarks in his opening speech at a dialogue with television journalists held on Monday (October 6) at the Election Commission building.
The CEC said, “The Reform Commission has lightened our workload. They held discussions with various stakeholders, which is why our dialogue is taking place a bit late.”
Reiterating the commission’s commitment, he said, “We have repeatedly stated that we want to ensure a free and fair election. Today’s dialogue is not just a formality. We want to move forward by taking your opinions into account. We will need your cooperation to create equal opportunities for all. We want to work with the media as our partner.”
Highlighting the role of the media, he added, “Your contribution is crucial in addressing misinformation and disinformation.”
The CEC further said, “Since taking office, we have completed many important tasks. We have updated the voter list and identified more than 2.1 million deceased voters—many of whom, according to media reports, were still found to be casting votes. We have also added over 4.3 million eligible voters to the list. The gender gap among voters, which was 3 million, has now come down to 1.8 million. We have been able to spark interest among people, particularly women, who had lost interest in becoming voters.”
He also said, “After consulting experts, we are arranging an IT-supported postal ballot system for expatriates. We are also taking steps to bring nearly 1 million people involved in election duties—including law enforcement, government officials, and inmates—under the voting process. This provision already existed in law, and we are now taking the initiative to implement it. Without your cooperation, we cannot hold a truly free and fair election, and this is not just rhetoric.”
The dialogue was moderated by EC Acting Secretary KM Ali Newaz and attended by the four election commissioners, EC officials, and representatives of the media.
