At least eight Bangladeshi nationals were killed in a road accident in Oman’s Duqm Sidra area on Wednesday (October 8) afternoon, around 3:00 pm local time. All of the deceased were reportedly from Sandwip upazila in Chattogram.

The Times of Oman, an English daily published in the country, also confirmed the casualties in a report quoting the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry, eight people were killed and two others were critically injured in the accident in Duqm Sidra. The ministry extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

The deceased were identified as Amin Saudagar, Arju, Rocky, Bablu, Shahabuddin, Jewel, Roni and Alauddin.

Eyewitnesses said the expatriates were returning from the sea after fishing when their vehicle collided with a fish-laden container truck in the area. The vehicle was severely damaged in the crash, leaving eight people dead on the spot.

Asadul Haque, Labour Secretary of the Bangladesh Embassy in Oman, confirmed the deaths, saying that eight Bangladeshi workers were killed instantly and the driver was critically injured. The injured driver was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. Following the accident, an embassy official rushed to the site to provide necessary assistance. The bodies have been kept in a morgue and will be sent to Bangladesh after legal formalities, he added.

Meanwhile, Sandwip Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mongchingnu Marma said they have received reports of seven expatriates from Sandwip being among the dead. Efforts are underway to gather further details.
