Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has responded to a claim by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan that he did not receive an appointment with the head of the interim government.

In a post on his verified Facebook account on Wednesday (October 29) morning, Majumder stated that there was nothing surprising about the BGMEA president’s sudden anti-government stance.

Majumder wrote, “In the latest meeting of the Advisory Council, the amendment of labour laws, and, a day earlier, Bangladesh’s signing of two important ILO conventions, were undoubtedly groundbreaking events. The amended law has made it easier for workers to form trade unions and has prohibited the practice of blacklisting workers for protests or any other reason.”

He added, “Many have tried to obstruct these initiatives, which are directly related to the interests of poor and hardworking people, due to vested interests. However, the interim government did not yield to any pressure.”

The Deputy Press Secretary also said, “On the same day, another law related to elections was amended, so these historic changes to the labour law did not receive much media coverage. However, a section of society has started to feel uncomfortable. Therefore, there is nothing surprising about the BGMEA president’s sudden anti-government stance.”

In an earlier post, Majumder noted that although the BGMEA president expressed anger over not meeting the Chief Adviser, he had personally seen the president just a few days ago attending a meeting chaired by the Chief Adviser to discuss preparations for Bangladesh’s graduation from the LDC category. “He was not only present but also raised various concerns of BGMEA directly at that meeting,” Majumder added.
