2 held with over Tk 25 lakh in fake and real currency
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested two individuals in connection with a large-scale counterfeit currency operation, seizing a combined total of over Tk 25 lakh in fake and real banknotes.
The suspects, Nurul Haque, 32, and Saidul Amin, 24, were taken into custody following a late-night raid in the Jhuriatuli area under Wari Police Station on Sunday, November 9.
The operation was launched after a confidential tip-off led authorities to a residence where the pair were allegedly manufacturing and storing forged currency.
At the scene, investigators seized counterfeit notes valued at Tk 6 lakh, along with legitimate currency amounting to Tk 19.7 lakh. Also seized were a money-counting machine, two stapling machines, and two packets of stapler pins – equipment consistent with organised counterfeiting activities.
DMP Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrests late Sunday night, stating that the suspects had been circulating fake notes in the local market for an extended period.
A case has been formally registered under the Special Powers Act at Wari Police Station. Authorities are currently investigating the full extent of the network and potential links to other suspects.
The DMP has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious financial transactions or individuals offering unusually large quantities of cash at suspicious rates.
