2 shooters among 5 arrested in Mamun murder in Old Dhaka
Police have arrested five individuals, including two professional shooters, in connection with the killing of Tariq Saif Mamun, 55, in connection with the killing of Tariq Saif Mamun, 55, in Old Dhaka. Two pistols were also recovered during the operation.
The development was confirmed to Jago News on Tuesday (November 11) by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman. He said the DMP’s Detective Branch recovered the two pistols used in the sensational murder in Sutrapur and arrested five people, including the shooters. Further details will be shared on Wednesday (November 12).
Mamun was shot dead in public in Sutrapur, Old Dhaka, on Monday (November 10). According to his relatives, he was attacked on his way home to Aftabnagar after attending a court hearing. Police said there had been a previous attempt on his life in Tejgaon two years ago.
Police described Mamun as a listed top terrorist and one of the leaders of the “Imon-Mamun” group. He was previously associated with another top terrorist, Sanjidul Islam Imon. Police said long-standing disputes over control of the criminal underworld existed between them.
DC Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami of DMP’s Lalbagh Division said Mamun was recognised as a top terrorist in police records. He was also accused in the murder cases of actor Sohel Chowdhury and Saeed Ahmed Tipu, brother of former army chief Aziz Ahmed.
Eyewitnesses and police said the assailants shot Mamun at close range. According to eyewitness Arafat Hossain, two individuals came down from a motorcycle and fired indiscriminately. The first shot hit the third-floor window of a nearby hospital. Mamun was then shot in the right side of his chest, and his hand was also hit. The attackers, wearing masks, fired six to seven rounds, with one wearing a cap.
