A murder case has finally been filed five days after Tariq Saif Mamun was shot dead in broad daylight in Old Dhaka.

Mamun’s wife, Bilkis Akter Ripa, filed the case at Sutrapur Police Station on Saturday. No one was named in the case; instead, 10 to 12 unidentified individuals have been accused.

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Islam confirmed the development.

When asked why the accused were listed as unidentified despite the Detective Branch (DB) arresting five suspects, the OC said the arrests were made in a firearms case and that the investigation officer of the murder case will determine their involvement through investigation.

On 11 November, the DB arrested five people, including two suspected shooters, in connection with Mamun’s killing. The two alleged shooters are Faruk alias Kutta Faruk and Robin. The other three arrested are Yusuf, Rubel, and Shamim.

Police claim Faruk and Robin are professional shooters. During the arrest, law enforcers recovered two pistols used in the murder, cash reportedly paid as remuneration, and the motorcycle used in the killing.

According to DB officials, the mastermind behind the murder is Roni—once a grocery shop owner and now a top gangster residing in Kafrul. The long-standing and well-known rivalry between underworld duo Imon and Mamun had intensified. Roni allegedly financed the killing with Tk 200,000 and supplied the weapons. The murder was carried out over control of underworld dominance. Roni remains on the run, and efforts are underway to arrest him.

Earlier, on Monday (10 November), Mamun was shot dead in broad daylight in Old Dhaka’s Sutrapur area. Following the murder, police identified him as a listed top terrorist and one of the leaders of the “Imon–Mamun” group. He was previously associated with another top terrorist, Sanjidul Islam Imon.

Family members earlier said Mamun was returning home to Aftabnagar after appearing in court in an old case when the assailants shot him dead. He had previously survived an assassination attempt in Tejgaon two years ago.
