Dhaka asks Delhi to extradite Hasina, Asaduzzaman after ICT verdict
Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both of whom were sentenced to death on Monday by the International Crimes Tribunal for their crimes against humanity during July Uprising.
In a press release issued shortly after the verdict, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two are now “fugitive convicts” and must be returned to face justice in Bangladesh.
The statement warned that granting shelter or protection to individuals convicted of crimes against humanity would be regarded as “unfriendly behaviour” and an act of “contempt for justice”.
Referring to the existing extradition agreement between Dhaka and New Delhi, the ministry said it is India’s “obligatory duty” under the treaty to hand over the convicted individuals to Bangladesh.
There has been no immediate response from India regarding the request.
