Govt finalises SPs for all dists via lottery ahead of election

The interim government has finalised the selection of Superintendents of Police (SPs) for all 64 districts to oversee duties during the 13th national parliamentary election. The SPs were chosen through a lottery held on Monday (24 November) at the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna. They will be posted in phases.

Officials from the Home Ministry and the Police Headquarters confirmed the development.

According to sources, Acting Inspector General of Police and DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sazzat Ali was present during the lottery. Senior officials from the Home Ministry and representatives from the Chief Adviser’s Office also attended.

Sources further said that while selecting district SPs, officers who had previously served as SPs were excluded at the initial stage. A fit list was then prepared after screening officers from the 25th, 27th and 28th batches of the police cadre. From that list, 64 officers were chosen through a manual lottery. They will be posted to various districts in phases.

Officials from the Home Ministry and Police Headquarters said that ahead of the national election, an initiative had been taken in early February to reshuffle and reassign field-level officers. As per the Chief Adviser’s directive, a list of qualified officers was submitted to the committee, which decided to finalise district postings through a lottery.

For this reason, the joining of newly appointed SPs in six districts—announced last week—has been put on hold. The lottery system will apply to them as well.

On Saturday afternoon, a two-hour meeting at the Home Ministry discussed policies related to police appointments and transfers during the election. Following that discussion, the SPs for all 64 districts were selected through the lottery.
